Rachel attended Grossmont College, a community college in a suburb of San Diego, but dropped out after one year -- taking her father's advice to pursue a professional acting career. Early on, she made several appearances in commercials, including advertisements for Subway restaurants, Raisin Bran and Pepto-Bismol.
But her debut on television did not come through until 2003, appearing in one episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and 8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter. Later that same year, Rachel was subsequently cast in The O.C., which debuted in August 2003. Her character, Summer Roberts, was initially intended to appear in only a few episodes, but became a series regular after a successful run.
Rachel's first film role was in The Last Kiss, a romantic comedy-drama also starring Zach Braff in 2006. She played a college student who seduces Braff's character. In late 2006, Rachel landed a role in the film Jumper as the replacement for actress Teresa Palmer; the film was released on February 14, 2008. And she appeared in a two-episode arc on the NBC comedy, Chuck and in the film New York, I Love You. In addition, Rachel appeared in the 100th episode of How I Met Your Mother ("Girls Versus Suits") as Ted Mosby's latest love interest.
In September 2008, Rachel starred in the film Waiting for Forever, and a year later, appeared as a celebrity guest judge on Project Runway. In 2011, Rachel was back on television with a lead role in The CW series Hart of Dixie, and the show went on for four seasons before its cancellation in May 2015. In 2017, Rachel joined the cast of CMT's Nashville for several episodes. At the end of 2017, it was announced Rachel was coming back to the television, starring in the upcoming ABC drama series Take Two.

In early 2008, the two had been seen and together around Los Angeles for almost a year without confirming a relationship. A year later, tabloids started noticing an addition to her ring finger -- though no official announcement was made. In the Fall of 2010, it was confirmed that there had been an engagement that had since been called off, giving no other details. However, Rachel and Hayden reconciled three months afterward, and welcomed daughter Briar Rose Christensen on October 29, 2014. The couple separated in September 2017; after a total of ten years together.
